Denis Jutzeler is a Swiss photographer who lives and works in Geneva. «Compositions», his most recent series of works gives its name to the exhibition which opens on January 17, 2019 at the galerie espace_L.
Jutzeler’s works are inspired by nature. His photographs are subject to a process of transformation. Through a series of digital interventions the photographer creates his own compositions: a new variety of plants and flowers that thus become the subject of his works. Some of his images resemble a storyboard made with images of indocile flora, meticulously composed and balanced. Denis Jutzeler works between film and photography; the dimension of time that emerges from his digital prints is closer to the first medium than the second. In his works, the multitude of layers grows and sometimes distorts the image. The artist transforms everything he deems appropriate to achieve the desired result. The spectator is thus obliged to penetrate into a collective unconscious that plunges him into another reality.
Mai-Britt Wolthers is a Danish artist who lives and works in Santos, Brazil. His «compositions» of graphite and color are characterized by a strong sense of fluidity between the different color fields that seem to work on two distinct levels: in the first, the artist seduces the spectator thanks to the use of color and a multitude of pictorial textures, in the second, it forces the spectator to focus his attention on several smaller areas and elements within his compositions. These narrations are based on original images from his personal photographic archives.
In Wolthers’s works, one can see that the detail of a painting or a drawing passes effortlessly from painting to engraving or from painting to space. In his works, certain forms are often repeated. Sometimes, we encounter certain symbols and elements that destabilize the flow of the composition and maintain a freshness to its visual language. His strange sculptures seem to exist independently of his paintings. Their humour and simplicity refer to different manifestations of the unconscious, while aiming at a tendency to outsource the forms of it.
The «compositions» of these two artists, despite the differences of technical processes, lead to the creation of fictional spaces.
