GVA_RIO
Exhibition January 7 to February 27, 2021
Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday from 11am to 6pm and by appointment
The GVA_RIO exhibition winks to sculptor Paul Landowski. In particular, he created monuments that mark the identity of the two cities: The Wall of the Reformers in Geneva and Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.
Through a sharp selection of works by the artists represented by the espace_L: Niura Bellavinha, Victoire Cathalan, Ana D. & Noora K., Fernando de la Rocque, Charles Husser, Denis Jutzeler, Lyz Parayzo, Catherine Rebois, Vivianne van Singer, Julien Spiewak, Mai-Britt Wolthers et Vasils Zografos, we invite you to relive the journey made by Landowski at the beginning of the 20th century.
In Geneva, the International Monument of the Reformation (1909-1917), known as the Wall of the Reformers, is an important symbol of the city. The monument pays tribute to the fathers of the Protestant Reformation. Its construction began in 1909, for the 400th anniversary of the birth of Jean Calvin and the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Geneva Academy, now the University of Geneva.
In Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer, the city’s flagship symbol, was built and inaugurated in 1931 at Corcovado, which owes its name to the shape of the mountain that rises more than 700 meters above the city. It is from here that he shows himself to the sight of all, opening his arms and symbolizing alone what characterizes, beyond the only city of Rio, the traditions of hospitality and hospitality of the Brazilian people.
It is through this symbolic journey that the GVA_RIO exhibition takes shape. The two emblematic monuments represent their respective cities, as well as their different culture and values. This diversity is the essence of the gallery, where you can discover a selection of Brazilian and European artists. We invite you to experience this journey at the espace_L.
