Pointillisme brésilien
with Edgard Soares
Opening May 20 at 6 p.m. in presence of the artist
Exhibition from May, 21 to July 15, 2014
Opening hours: Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also by appointment.
Edgard Soares is a Brazilian artist. His work is based in everyday life, on the news and in his own experiments. With great detachment and humor, it offers another look at what is considered reality. With great freedom, his work does not neglect a reflective consciousness about certain facts of life.
Often referring to artistic movements in general, the artist adopts the same poetic and playful attitude towards art history. Thus, in the series presented in this exhibition, entitled "Brazilian Pointillism", his inspiration lies both in his own experience as well as the concepts of this artistic movement.
The artist recalls that long time ago, when he arrived in Geneva to complete his studies at the School of Fine Arts, some people whom he became acquainted with, knowing that he was a Brazilian, often asked the same questions:
- Do you play soccer?
- Do you dance the samba?
And they were regularly confronted by a categorical:
- No.
The surprise aroused another curiosity:
- What do you do then?
And the answer seemed unexpected:
- I'm an artist
In recalling this, Soares decided to dress as a soccer player, display the canvases on the ground and perform above them wearing "chuteiras" (Brazilian name for soccer shoes) whose spikes are soaked with paint, recreating a football field. The final work recalls paintings by artists such as Georges Seurat.
In Soares works the facts are intertwined, personal or not, with an uninhibited view towards the history of art. The choice of materials used in his paintings and sculptures goes along with this attitude. His works are made from materials found in everyday life, such as the use of packaging sagex with which he built a cube and dropped for some time on the streets.
In this exhibition the espace_L presents a series of works evoking different contexts that are presented with the same spirit.
Edgard Soares was born in São Paulo in 1965; he lives and works in Geneva.
